What resources are there to make teaching in-company more attractive to educated, 2, Level students?
My students mostly engineers, lawyers and accountant. I teach at night after they have had a long day. Currently using Side by Side Student Workbook 2 and some discussion topics and questions that I get online. As a teacher the first time, I could use help with resources.
Side by Side is a popular resource, but limiting. Since you do ESP (English for Specific Purposes), I really put some things they do at work into what you teach, because it is probably why they are learning. Everyone loves to talk about current events, so bring materials such as TIME magazine or U.S. News and World Report that provides info for more educated people to discuss and write about. To make it interesting, you can work on a project that uses all their skills and not limited to one type of learning (so that pressing for multiple intelligences and use, spatial logic, audio skills). You can do this by having everyone contribute in a large paper mache project, such as creating Christmas creche, or ornament of their own culture to hang around their homes ... it means you have to collect the materials (paper mache is easy enough). After the project is also making they are motivated for a longer period of time to achieve something that is set. Also up for presentations, so they should present material about their work (so, for example, Engineer can explain the concept or show HOW to do something and a lawyer can explain to others about their justice system.) This will help them to also convey what they most need help. You also could have them read something very interesting that they do not have time to read at home (like an enjoyable novel or a short story in English). Many professionals enjoy my adult students have English classes as a time to also do things they normally do not have time to do at home or after they leave school. So, they are beefing up their English skills while also doing something relaxing. People are always interested in talking and read about human behavior. You can watch a movie or TV clip (I Love Lucy always understood at every level) and then discuss them, write about them, making alternative script for them, pulling the things that represent them, revive them, etc. So many ideas. What fun to have a teacher like you who are interested in creating interesting things for their students.
